THE MATERIALS WE USE

Combining contrasting materials with balance

HORN Not only is it a sustainable material, it is also surprisingly lightweight and gives a luxurious yet relaxed look. BONE is another sustainable material we use at Kálamo. Our favorite is the one that keeps its original shades, without dyes. We love using WOOD, which brings a bold touch to our designs while maintaining an almost timeless quality. We usually use rosewood or ebony, with no chemicals on the surface. MOTHER-OF-PEARL is the inner layer of the shells of certain mollusks. At Kálamo, we like to use it in white, gray or beige tones, although it can naturally be found in many other shades. In fact, the iridescence of abalone mother-of-pearl is one of the most astonishing materials in nature. FRESHWATER PEARLS are cultivated in lakes and rivers, and mollusks can produce more than one at a time. We prefer to use undyed pearls in their natural shades, such as white, grey, pink or pale lilac. Jewelry made from CERAMIC is the oldest known jewlery craft in the world. Creating ceramic pieces is a long and precious process that includes shaping, firing, glazing and firing again. We use water-based ACRYLICS, not to be confused with plastic, to lighten the weight of certain pieces and add strength to some parts. Nothing else performs quite the same in this regard. LEATHER lends our jewelry an incomparable understated luxury. It is an extremely durable material with endless possibilities. We use surgical STEEL and nickel-free plated brass, so the metal parts are hypoallergenic. SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES are always present in Kálamo jewlery. We work hard with our suppliers to know exactly where they come from. Stones offer a wide range of creative possibilities: shapes, cuts, finishes and tones.
